El Gobierno de Canarias, a través de la Consejería de Cultura y Deportes, impulsa el sector cinematográfico y audiovisual, como forma de potenciar nuestros valores culturales, contribuyendo al desarrollo económico, la creación de empleo y el desarrollo de una industria audiovisual. Por ello, en 2005 se puso en marcha el Plan Audiovisual de Canarias (PCA), gestionado por la entidad pública Canarias Cultura en Red S.A (CCER).
A través del Plan Audiovisual Canario, se han convocado anualmente concursos públicos para apoyar el desarrollo y la producción de obras cinematográficas y televisivas, así como para la producción de cortometrajes. Estas convocatorias públicas dependen de la disponibilidad presupuestaria y normalmente se convocan cada año entre mayo y julio.
El Plan Audiovisual Canario también ofrece apoyo a la escritura de guiones a través del Laboratorio de Escritura Audiovisual de Canarias (LEAC), que selecciona cada año 6 guiones de largometrajes, para desarrollarlos contando con el apoyo de expertos en un periodo de 9 meses.

La Viceconsejería de Cultura y Deportes del Gobierno de Canarias, a través de la empresa pública Canarias Cultura en Red, convoca anualmente ayudas económicas destinadas a incentivar la producción y el desarrollo de obras audiovisuales mediante la fórmula de coproducción financiera para proyectos audiovisuales cinematográficos, televisivos y de apoyo a cortometrajes.
Cada año, las fechas de presentación y los periodos de ayudas y subvenciones varían, por lo que la Gran Canaria Film Commission recomienda a aquellas productoras interesadas en optar a algunas de estas ayudas económicas, consultar periódicamente la página web de la Viceconsejería de Cultura y Deportes de Canarias.

The Government of the Canary Islands has completed the process of transformation of the company Canarias Cultura en Red and its conversion into the Canary Islands Institute for Cultural Development in order to give greater impetus to cultural policy and make it more accessible to citizens.
With this, he indicates, “we align the new structures to the challenges of the 2030 Agenda and its objectives for sustainable development, placing citizenship and the right to culture at the center of our management”.
The new organizational structure is aimed at ensuring that all the actions developed by the ICDC are based on three strategic axes, that is, that its objective goes far beyond holding an event or a cultural activity, but also contributes to the social, community and economic development of the Canary Islands from a cultural perspective, with active policies applied with these criteria.
Thus, it is a new strategic configuration of culture, directing cultural action from an integrating and more democratic perspective, prioritizing equal access to culture, active participation, attention and visibility of all groups, particularly the most vulnerable and those at risk of exclusion, all under the premise of absolute transparency in all the processes that are developed.
